The Real World: Artifact 5

I included this artifact not only as a tool to look back on how fast changing the world has become during the past 20 years but also as a reminder that students are also changing along with the world. Not only are students creating a growth mindset but they are also being advocates for their learning. They are making changes to the curriculum and helping decide what they want to learn about and how this will be taught. One of the fastest changes that can be seen in the 21st century is technology. I find this a fascinating part to the education system as students are able to connect with peers around the world in order to develop their understanding on different topics. We as educators are preparing students to not only advocate for their learning but developing them to be ready for jobs that have not been thought of before.

This artifact is important in the context of classroom management as we as educators are now having to develop new classroom management techniques for a changing society/ education system. I think that this is a great reminder that not only do we have our backgrounds in classroom management to fall back on but we must be life-long learners and develop new management techniques and tweak ones in order to work for the 21st century classroom.

  1. The internet has changed everything that we do and has taken a crucial part in how we learn. It’s hard to imagine that students are using the internet on a daily basis when many of us teachers were still trying to figure out how it worked when we were their age. This is one fast change that is a very positive impact on teaching and learning. As students and teachers are able to utilize the information on the internet to further thinking, develop lesson plans, complete assignments and more. (Progress and Innovation)

  2. I am sure that most people have used social media one way. Though some people may think that this has had a negative impact on students, there are many positive impacts that social media has had on learning. Such as being able to share ideas and connect with professionals in order to grow understanding through twitter. As well as share experiences through youtube. Along with the great uses of social media students should be taught as well about the implications that it can have in the long run. For example sharing photos with friends can be exciting but we should be fully aware that these photos are never truly gone even if we think we deleted them. (progress and innovation)
  3. Climate change has become a very fast change that has occurred in the world. Student will need to learn to adapt to the climate and develop ways to sustain life in the future. Since climate change can never fully be stopped students will need to continue to develop ways to help slow the process and create a stable environment for future generations. (progress and innovation)
  4. More children around the world are attending school than ever before. And this is a great thing as more people in the world are taught to be progressive and engaged in learning the more inventions, cures and innovations are created to better society. “enrolment rates have jumped from somewhere over three quarters in 1990 to about 90 per cent in 2010.” (unfpa).
  5. “There are more international migrants than ever. In 1990, 154 million people travelled from their home countries in search of new opportunities. In 2013, this number was 232 million” (unfpa). This is a positive impact on learning as students are able to learn from their peers by connecting experiences in order to develop greater insights for how the world works.
  6. Collaboration is being used instead of old power models where ideas were seen as coming from one person. Now collaboration is being used in the workplace as well as schools where people are able to share their ideas and connect with others to develop supported concepts. “Everyone has different backgrounds, talents or skills and is happy to trade and share them” (huffington).
  7. People are focusing more on their health and the foods that they are putting into their bodies. With this change from fast foods to natural ingredients we see that there is a “huge connection between clean, healthy, organic food and a happy, successful life” (huffington). This is a positive change for students in the classroom as they will have bright minds for learning.
  8. We are learning outside of the classroom. Parents are taking their kids around the world to learn about economics, society, history, language and then the students are bringing this back to the classroom. This has had a positive impact on the education system as we are able to learn and grow as a community through experiences rather than through textbooks. (huffington)
  9. Students are becoming advocates for their own learning. Their voices are being heard and the teachers and students are learning together as a community. This is a positive change as students are able to learn the required information in a way that is differentiated for their learning, and poses interest in their lives.
  10. Teachers are creating opportunities for creativity and learning to develop rather than be learned through textbook style lessons. “This design-led approach to education changes the narrative from education as something that is received from outside to something that is generated by experience” (weforum).
